Seventeen shields are lowered into the waters of the Vänerviken. Three thousand years later, a farmer runs the plough across his fields. Today, these unique shields are on display at our museum. The suggestive slideshow Near and Far will bring you close to the people of the Bronze Age. Travels in the footsteps of Arn the Templar mirror the interest in another distant period in time. A visit to medieval Västergötland starts, of course, in our exhibition titled Middle Age Skara. Next to us you can find the largest outdoor museum of western Sweden, Fornbyn – The old village - where all the ancient buildings in the beautiful park will move you through moods and ages. This, among many other things, awaits you at the museum of Västergötland. And in case you get hungry, why not try the specialties at the Kråks Inn, in the mansion next door?

Feel free to combine your visit with a trip to Varnhem and the convent museum, or to our museum farm – Heljes Farm – at Hornborga lake. At Lugnås, ten kilometres out of Mariestad, lies the old millstone quarry. More information to be found on our website.
